Eve Ensler was interviewed on DemocracyNow this morning, and was truly inspirational. Despite battling cancer herself, she has organized an event in February called ‘OneBillionRising” so that women all over the world can dance in the streets, in their towns, in their cities to protest rape, shout out about the extent of violence against women all over the globe and support services for women who have been raped worldwide. Clearly, more needs to be done. One out of three women will be raped during their lifetimes, a truly frightening statistic to me, and yet we still get comments from a Congressman like Akin that shows absolutely no understanding of what rape does to a woman, how recovery takes a lifetime, and how little control a woman has in such a situation, let alone the control to ‘not get pregnant’ from the rape. The notion of women dancing, dancing!, together on February 14th next year to say, ‘No more. It’s time to do something about this,” gave me a boost on this Monday morning. Only someone like Ensler could come up with an idea like this, an event like this – using joy to combat unspeakable misery. That this creative woman could germinate a seed for such an event, and watch it take off and grow through the support of individual women like me and like you is an inspiration. Check out the website, watch the video, and help to plan a way for your community to participate in this ‘happening’. The power of women is sometimes astonishing to me. A huge thanks to Eve Ensler for the work she does and the spirit that fills the screen whenever I tune in and happen to see her. www.OneBillionRising.org
