Labor Day Weekend we planned a trip with my older daughter and her husband in Victoria, BC. The idea was actually my daughter’s, which was a very pleasant change. I had spoken to both girls about my aging the last time I visited the town where they live, and the fact that traveling eight hours from my home to theirs was getting more tiresome for me, and that I needed them to make the trip at least one time a year. One daughter suggested meeting closer to her home base for three days, and certainly to mine. The elder suggested Victoria, a longer trip for them. I was quite anxious about the trip, since that daughter and I often rub each other the wrong way, but I needn’t have worried. We had the best time together we have had in years, sharing stories of the past, current world news, current experiences – all the subjects most people who talk with each other talk about. I had seen her counselor at her request the last time I visited and can only assume what was shared at the hour session had an impact, both on the therapist, who said she and my daughter had issues to discuss, and my daughter. Whatever the reason, I feel very grateful that we were able to enjoy each other as adults, telling each other stories about our respective lives, laughing, doing some things together, all four of us, and some apart. I shared this with her, as is my way, and she readily and openly agreed. “I had so much fun too, Mama,” and then again told me she loves me, which she often says. This trip, the behavior matched the words, and it seemed a huge gift to me. Bravo to her and to me for being receptive.
